2023-present

Reporter,

Military Times

I report about disinformation and extremism among military and veteran communities, and I write about how those populations participate in solutions to anti-democratic movements. My position is a fellowship created in partnership with Military Veterans in Journalism and runs through the 2024 presidential election. It was funded with grants from the Knight Foundation, the Craig Newmark Philanthropies and the MacArthur Foundation. As part of the fellowship, I received training during the summer of 2023 from Poynter, PolitiFact, the Solutions Journalism Network, Project Over Zero and the Task Force Butler Institute.

2022-2023

Technology Reporter,
Denver Business Journal

I broke news about technology companies and startups in the Denver metropolitan area, as well as led coverage for Colorado Inno, the journal's news website on business innovation. I wrote and published The Beat, a monthly newsletter about Denver's startup industry, and grew subscribers by 40% in 10 months. I became a trusted source regarding the local tech and startup communities.

2016 - 2022

National Reporter,
Stars and Stripes

I worked in Washington, D.C., for six years, breaking news from Capitol Hill, the White House and the Department of Veterans Affairs about issues affecting veterans, service members and their families. During my time at Stripes, I traveled to 14 different states to investigate and report on veteran-related issues, from supply shortages at VA hospitals to the treatment of Native American veterans.

2015 - 2016

City Hall Reporter,
Lawrence Journal-World

I became a wonk, immersed in the details of policy, while covering the city government of Lawrence, Kansas. I wrote about the city commission, covered zoning commission meetings, reported on local elections and traveled to Iowa to profile the city's incoming city manager. I wrote a five-part series on Lawrence's affordable housing crisis and investigated a developer's misuse of a special taxing district that resulted in an eventual conviction.

2014 - 2015

City Desk Reporter,
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

One of my first big assignments as a full-time reporter was to lead a team in the coverage of a kidnapping and murder of a local realtor and the arrest of her killers. That series of stories won multiple statewide awards. My daily duties in Arkansas included breaking news on a nighttime crime beat and covering the state's military bases and VA hospitals.

2010 - 2014

Intern and student,
various publications

Prior to graduating in 2014, I held multiple jobs and internships. I officially started my career in 2010 as a designer at the University Daily Kansan, and I worked my way up to become managing editor of the student publication during my junior year. I reported in 2011 as an intern at The McPherson Sentinel - my hometown paper - where I did all the writing, designing and photography for the special issue on the county fair. I later interned at The Hutchinson News and the Lawrence Journal-World.

Education

2010 - 2014

University of Kansas | Bachelor’s of Science Degree

I graduated with distinction and a 3.96 GPA from the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Kansas, where I earned a degree in News and Information. I also earned minor degrees from KU in English and business administration.
